Beekeeping 101 with Andrew
Last Thursday we had an incredible, in‑depth learning experience with local beekeeper Andrew Harbison of Suwannee Farms, Inc.
Andrew began the morning by walking us through the real-world dynamics of buying and owning bees—everything from choosing the right equipment to understanding colony behavior, seasonal needs, and what new beekeepers should expect in their first year. His explanations were clear, practical, and full of the kind of insight that only comes from years of hands-on experience.
After the classroom portion, Andrew led the group out to the active hives for a truly unforgettable, hands-on workshop. He opened the hives, showed us the inner workings of a healthy colony, and explained how each part of the hive functions. Participants got to see frames up close, observe the bees’ behavior, and learn how to read what’s happening inside a hive—something you can only fully appreciate when you’re standing right there in the middle of it.
It was a fascinating blend of education, curiosity, and a little bit of adventure, and we’re so grateful to everyone who joined us.
A heartfelt thank you to Andrew for sharing his expertise and passion, and thank you to all who came out to learn with us.
We have several workshops scheduled throughout the year
Stepping Stones, Plant Propagation, Feather Grapevine Wreaths, Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Flower Arranging, Roselle & Beyond: The Extensive Benefits of Roselle, Understanding the Honey Bee & Wild Bee Conflict, Edible Weeds, Macrame Plant Hangers and more …..
